CONTRACT RESEARCH ORGANIZATION (CRO)

Poulpharm was founded in 2006 as an independent contract research partner for studies on animal health.
Poulpharm is specialized in customer-tailored solutions for all research and drug development needs, guaranteeing quality, efficiency, cost-effectiveness and scientific integrity.

Expertise

Poulpharm CRO has expertise and developed a wide range of animal models related to parasitic, bacterial and viral related diseases. Poulpharm is well known in the poultry industry but has broaden his experience to (mini-)pigs and rabbits. Trials assess product efficacy, digestibility, safety and toxicity, all tailored to the need of the customer.

High standard GLP and GCPv trials and A2 facilities

Preclinical studies at Poulpharm are GLP or GCP compliant, making Poulpharm a reliable research partner for conducting preclinical studies following appropriate regulatory guidelines.

Poulpharm is recognized by the Flemish government, Department of Environment, Department of Strategy, International Policy and Animal Welfare. Next to that, we also received the approval of the Flemish government, area development department, environmental planning and projects, to work with BSL2 pathogens and Type 2 GGOs.

The facility accommodates state-of-the-art animal housing, including

  • 32 HEPA-filtered isolators where each isolator has its own controlled and contained environment for conducting BSL2 bacterial, viral and parasitic research.
  • 4 experimental houses for floorpen studies and battery cage trials (nutritional trials and enteric infections) for poultry, game birds and rabbits. We can house up to 200 floorpens/house and 240 battery cages/house.
  • 2 commercial poultry houses and 2 fattening pig houses that simulate field conditions
  • 12 HEPA-filtered A2 isolation rooms (40 and 60m²), for both housing of pigs and poultry under strickly controlled hygiene standards

What can Poulpharm do for you?

Poulpharm will guide you from the concept to completion of the trial, by providing:

  • Appropriate study design and protocol development
  • Sourcing of animals (specific-pathogen-free (SPF), commercially hatched/reared, natural infestated)
  • Tailor-made study-diet formulation and manufacturing
  • Inocula production (viral, bacterial and parasitic)
  • Follow-up of the in vivo phase in climate-controlled facilities
  • Lesion scoring, clinical evaluations, feed and water intake monitoring
  • Lab analysis
  • Bioanalysis, data management, statistical analysis
  • Completion of the final study report

The team consists of dedicated study directors, veterinarians, researchers, animal care takers, lab technicians, a quality manager and statistician, all supporting clients in their technical and scientific questions.

Study models are available (but not limitative to):

  • Bacteria (e.g. Clostridium, Escherichia-coli, Salmonella, Mycoplasma, Gallibacterium anatis,…)
  • Viruses (e.g. IBV, Marek, Fowl pox, ILT, TRT, LPAI, Reovirus, …)
  • Parasites (Eimeria spp., Histomonas meleagridis, Ascaridia galli, Capillaria spp., Heterakis gallinarum, Dermanyssus gallinae, …)
  • Inflammatory models (LPS, arthritis,...)
  • Gut health models (Necrotic enteritis, Bacterial enteritis, leaky gut,…)
  • Nutritional trials
  • ...

Network and partners

Poulpharm has fully equipped laboratories for a range of viral, bacterial and parasitic assays. Poulpharm lab is ISO 17025 accredited (BELAC 610-TEST) and GLP certified for this assays. GLP-compliant analytical assays for pharmacokinetic and residue studies are offered in collaboration with Vetspin (Italian satellite lab) or the Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Ghent University.

In collaboration with a specialist in the Netherlands, study diets can be produced tailor-made.

Development of new study models and fundamental research in partnership with Ghent University (Chair Poultry Health Science).

Finally, Poulpharm is werking in close cooperation with the poultry and pig industry (farmers, veterinarians, feed mills, hatcheries,…), given them a close inside in the economically important field situations.
